A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

The joys of autumn...

Autumn has finally descended upon Pittsburgh, effectively ending my summer romance. Amazingly, I have found new things to love.

The foliage is absolutely spectacular! The trees are full of reds, oranges, and rust colored leaves. They are so beautiful that I can only hope that I can find a dress in one of those colors.

Being able to breathe freely without the humidity is a welcome relief. I might be inspired to take up running again. Also, the clear, crisp air allows for more expanded wardrobe options.

You're probably surprised to hear me talk about autumn with such affection given my recent love affair with summer. What can I say, I'm fickle! :-)

Also, you know how romance goes. When you're in the midst of it, you are blind to its faults. However, after it's over, you have a chance to gain some persepctive. And perspective has a way of making you realize that you shouldn't limit yourself.

As much as I loved summer, I am looking forward to feeling the cool air kiss my cheeks, smelling the burning of leaves, and hearing the rustling of the trees...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
