Celebrating Black Maternal Health Week #BMHW25

Mom and three kids Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. Black Maternal Health Week April 11-17, 2025 I am a Black mom to three wonderful children. I was blessed to have three successful births. While I am an attorney, my third delivery highlighted the potential risks that occur when a physician fails to listen to the birthing person. Initially, I chalked it up to the physician involved and limited it to my personal birthing experience. Then, I learned that I was not special. Overwhelmingly, Black women experience higher rates of birth trauma, birthing complications and negative birth outcomes.  These statistics are what lead to the creation of ...

I've been too tough on Tavis Smiley...

I have been familiar with Tavis Smiley since his days on BET. I have criticized his presentation style and ridiculed his judgmental stance on Barack Obama. I still believe that his criticism of Obama for not participating in his "State of the Black Union" convention has been unduly harsh. However, I now believe that Tavis is doing important work.

The title of his event describes its purpose. And by having a yearly event that focuses on Black issues Tavis is ensuring that the plight of Black people and issues that are relevant to Black families remain in the public consciousness. By having a forum that presents the views of influential Black leaders he ensures that Black folk like me who are fairly comfortable do not forget that our struggle is not complete until everyone who looks like us has an equal opportunity.

The event reminds us as Hilary Clinton said at the event that "The state of the American union is not strong until the state of Black America is strong." While I do not endorse her candidacy, her statement was both powerful and accurate.

Tavis is doing something that nobody is doing; and it is a necessary pulse check. So today I shall give Tavis a break and simply say "thank you".
