The 2024 presidential election motivated me to have a birthday do-over

At the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater Pointe in Time Emerald Gala Today marks a week since my birthday.  Its occurrence is a tremendous blessing. Because all around us are reminders about the fragility of life. To that end, my brother, who always makes a point to celebrate me, took me to the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater's Pointe in Time Emerald Gala on November 2d. That was the beginning of my birthday celebrations. And then, on my birthday itself, I got a bit of a surprise... My actual birthday was tough. It was Election Day. And, I spent the day working polls as a part of an election protection effort. My efforts were designed to protect all voters. However, deep in my heart I love my AKA sister, Kamala Harris and I hoped for her historic victory. Then, much to my chagrin and despite my efforts—and those of thousands more—she lost. In my estimation, that loss was one of the greatest setbacks in human dignity in my lifetime.  The country elected a felon and self-proclaimed, racist, ableis

Our Hope Was Realized…

Obama’s victory is historic and incredible. However, as I ran today. I reflected on his victory and realized that his win transcends this election. His victory liberated this nation. Senior citizens who had never voted now believe that their vote counts. Those who had never participated in an election now believe that their efforts can make a difference. Those who were afraid to even dream now believe that it is possible to achieve their dreams. And, those previously ruled by fear are now courageous.

We transformed ourselves in just one night. Last night, America won because we voted our collective heart's desire. Like Fannie Lou Hamer, we were simply "sick and tired of being sick and tired". We embraced something new and different. We placed prejudice aside. We decided to hope. And, that hope has made us stronger.

Today is my birthday. I began my birthday listening to my future president give his victory speech. I was so honored to call myself an American. I was encouraged that so many of my fellow Americans joined Obama, me, and so many others on our quest to make this nation live up to its principles. Obama won because a lot of individuals of different backgrounds believed. They believed in him. They believed in themselves. And they believed in America.

As John McCain acknowledged, Obama won, fair and square. Although his victory is not a panacea for all that ails this country, it is a start. For that reason, I continue to have hope!

You are right, Chatón. Yesterday was just the begining. Maybe it was the end of the beginning, but most of the road is still ahead. Those who believe that most is already done, will be very disapointed soon.

This election was nothing less than the last, best chance of saving the USA from the abuse and mismanagement of the last eight years.

God bless president-elect Obama, his family, and his cabinet as they begin to heal the nation.
