I'm a runner. However, I have lots of responsibilities. Accordingly, sometimes I have to change on the fly. I've changed in cars, my office, closets, you name it. Recognizing the potential embarrassment from getting caught in a compromising position, I am beyond careful. Indeed, I have mastered the art of changing clothes without ever actually being exposed. What can I say, it's a talent. To date, I have never gotten caught. (Know that I am knocking on wood as I type this... :-))
I have recently learned that not everyone shares my sense of modesty. Some people, just let it all hang out, even if they are in public.
The other day, I came across a man in his boxers in one of the busiest parking garages in downtown Pittsburgh. When I realized that he wasn't wearing pants, I tried not to look. However, it was hard not to. He was not even trying to be discreet. Moreover, he was directly in my line of sight. He was standing outside of his car, changing under a light right next to the elevator.
I could tell that he wasn't some drunken homeless man in search of shelter. By appearances at least, he was a successful businessman. While I did not stare, I looked long enough to tell that his boxers were clean and made by some designer. He was also taking his clothes out of the trunk of a Mercedes. The out-of-state tags on his car suggested that he was from out of town, which is probably why he found himself without a proper changing area.
When I shared the story with my assistant, she asked me whether the look was worth it. Alas, it was not. It is possible that my response would have been different had I happened upon a man with perfect abs in nothing but his Calvins. I doubt it though.
There is no circumstance under which it is OK to casually stand in your underwear in public. As one who changes everywhere, I know that discretion is the cardinal rule for changing in public. The "Parking Garage Changer" breached that rule without excuse. C'mon, nobody is that busy...
