Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of sharing a snack with my toddler. Actually we shared some salad toppings from a bag and mommy called it a snack. However, at 18 months she was fine with that.
We both reached our hands in the bag and took as much as we wanted. She was thrilled beyond belief to be sharing with me. I think that it made her feel like a big girl. I was thrilled beyond belief to be sharing with her because I realized that she is a big girl. She is a girl who knows what she wants and knows how to get it, even if it is just a simple snack.
The moment was so special to me. The sun was shining through the windows. She and I were sitting on the stairs. We were both munching on our snack. And we were smiling. Every once in a while she would giggle a bit. And I did too.
I had bliss in that simple moment. I also had a foreshadowing. If we are blessed with the gift of years she and I will share many meals, snacks and beverages together. Indeed, the act of sharing--sharing a meal, sharing a beverage, sharing a life--is an expression of love. Today, while I grabbed some lunch I witnessed other women with their daughters sharing a meal and experiencing that bliss too.
I know that I write about the challenges of being a mom and they are real. However, being a mother has also brought me immeasurable joy and it has made even the simple things, like snack time, more pleasurable.
