As a working mom, experiencing a Monday is kind of like living in the Twilight Zone. This morning I had a meeting downtown at 8:30 AM. The meeting was at a different place and earlier than I usually work. Since I live near downtown and it was a nice day I decided to walk. I was excited to walk because usually I drive to work. Also, I was proud of myself since walking was a green choice.
Walking took planning.
Ahh, Mondays!
Jacket, dress and the reliable shoes. Andre, the toddler and I went for a run after work and I forgot to take a photo while I was dressed!
Walking took planning.
Walking meant that I had to wear flats and I had to select clothes that went with them. I have a lot of clothes, but at 5’2” I usually wear stilettos. However, there’s no way that I could teeter all the way to the meeting in heels. I settled on a pair of persimmon colored Franco Sarto loafers with a slight heel. They had rubber soles so they were perfect. I found an olive, Marc New York and paired it with a striped blazer. I was excited that I found a good outfit and shoes that I wouldn’t mind wearing all day instead of lugging a pair of shoes with me. When you’re walking you don’t want to carry anything unnecessary.
Selecting the outfit took time. Also, because I am me and there are always things that need to be done at my house I did about twenty other things before leaving the house. After doing those things I looked at my watch and knew that I had to walk really fast!
So I dashed out of the house with conviction. Then I hit a road block. The fastest way to downtown is out of the back of my community. However, when I reached the back gate to my community, I didn’t have the key to get out. I panicked and said words that would have gotten the toddler spanked! Then, miracles of miracles, a neighbor appeared. I asked him whether he had his key. I had never seen him before and he thought that I had parked illegally and was trying to cut through our community. After addressing his concerns, he obliged my request and opened the gate. Then, I took off!
As I power walked to work I imagined that I looked a lot like those odd walkers in the Olympics—a vision of hip swaying and awkwardness. I was impressed by my speed though. And as luck would have it I got lucky at the intersections. I was also impressed by how comfortable the shoes were. Why did I endure that instead of driving? I have learned that downtown traffic is unpredictable and the parking garages often say “ Lease Only” at the entrance. I surmised that I would have more control on foot. I was right!
I arrived at my building, got through surgery and blotted the sweat off of my in the elevator. When the elevator arrived at my floor I gracefully glided off and entered the conference room on time. I sat in my chair very smug and proud at all that I had accomplished that morning. I even got an unexpected work out!
