Celebrating Black Maternal Health Week #BMHW25

Mom and three kids Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. Black Maternal Health Week April 11-17, 2025 I am a Black mom to three wonderful children. I was blessed to have three successful births. While I am an attorney, my third delivery highlighted the potential risks that occur when a physician fails to listen to the birthing person. Initially, I chalked it up to the physician involved and limited it to my personal birthing experience. Then, I learned that I was not special. Overwhelmingly, Black women experience higher rates of birth trauma, birthing complications and negative birth outcomes.  These statistics are what lead to the creation of ...

Twas the Night Before Christmas...

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house were piles of –ish.

I think I heard a mouse.

The toddler was refusing to get in her bed.

She is very strong willed and has thoughts in her head.

With Dre in his boxers and me in my wrap

Both praying the toddler will take a long winter’s nap

The bras were hung on the door knobs with care

with hopes that a housekeeper soon would be there.

When upstairs in the crawl space there arose such a clatter.

We sprang to our feet to see what was the matter.

We got upstairs in a blink, in a flash

There standing in her crib was the toddler with much sass

That little girl was so lively and quick

If she didn’t go to sleep she was going to meet St. Nick

We were not surprised, every night was the same

When in her bed too long she started calling us by name

Now “Daddy!” Now “Mommy!” Now GG and JT!

Somebody, anybody come and get me!

We’re willing to try anything. So, a story we share.

And we rock her in the rocking chair.

We are hopeful that asleep she’ll fall.

Wish us luck as we try to finish it all!

And, of course, Merry Christmas to all.

And to all a good night!
