Celebrating Black Maternal Health Week #BMHW25

Mom and three kids Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! Things have been busy. I am still a working mom of three, working full time who is trying to make a difference. I do a lot of things and try to be present so that I can learn from them. I share them on this blog so that we can learn together. Below are some thoughts, hacks, and/or lessons that I have learned from navigating my world. Black Maternal Health Week April 11-17, 2025 I am a Black mom to three wonderful children. I was blessed to have three successful births. While I am an attorney, my third delivery highlighted the potential risks that occur when a physician fails to listen to the birthing person. Initially, I chalked it up to the physician involved and limited it to my personal birthing experience. Then, I learned that I was not special. These days everybody is busy. However, nobody is busier than a working mom. We do the same things that everybody else does—in less time. Before I had children I thought I had a jam packed schedule, and I did. However, now that I have added two children to the mix my schedule is the same, it’s just on steroids!

Eating well is one way to manage your body's response to stress

I manage my schedule with good planning, strategic decisions, and support from my husband and our nanny. Still in the midst of it, I have to make sure that I take care of myself. One way I do that is by eating relatively healthy. I say relatively because like everyone I have my vices. However, I tend to apply the 80/20 rule to my diet. I eat well 80 % of the time and the rest of the time, I do what I want (translation, sometimes I eat chocolate, drink wine and have potato chips).

Even with my choices, sometimes my world gets stressful. Because I am loathe to medicate myself as a work/life balance technique, I am always open to homeopathic ways to support my mood and immune system. For that reason, I was excited to see a piece in Redbook magazine entitled, “20 Foods You Should Eat When You’re Stressed”.

Eating well to live healthier and feel better is up my alley! The items listed are healthy and tasty. Quite a few are already a part of my diet. Perhaps that’s why I tend to feel good and my blood pressure is on the low side??? Anyway, check out the article and let me know if eating this food lowers your stress.
