A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

The election results were surprising to many, including me. They also had me feeling a little lost. It was and is unclear to me how a candidate who ran a campaign filled with insults, angry speech, and racist comments won the majority of electoral votes and became our president. I understand that he had a simple message, “Make American Great Again” that resonated with people. However, I am surprised that the majority of Americans believe that his views actual express how they define great.


Like many women I questioned many things, including how to interpret the results and how I could continue to shoot for the stars when a woman who had exceeded every qualification needed for serving as president wasn’t selected for the job. I will continue to ponder these questions. However, I believe that the answer won’t be found in simply thinking. The answer will be found in doing. For me, that will start with making my bed every day.  The little things can make all of the difference...
