A Secret to Success as a Working Mom: Turn Burn Out Into Bliss and Embrace Joy

Last weekend my youngest was committed to going to the "Water Steps" a man-made water fall in Pittsburgh by the rivers. (Fun Fact: Three rivers converge in Pittsburgh--The Ohio River, The Monongahela River, and the Allegheny River.)  He kept asking. I knew he was serious when he said, "If you won't take me, I'll ask  daddy!" Given that it was highly unlikely that would happen on an unscheduled day, I relented. So, we went. It wasn’t planned in the way most things in my life are. No calendar block. No checklist. No “productive” purpose attached. And, so in some respects it was uncomfortable. And yet, it seemed necessary. It was the idea of my 8-year-old—offered with the kind of urgency only children possess when something is profoundly important to them.

Friday Tip: Be Renewed this Easter Season

Easter Eggs

"I am come that they might have life. And that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10
God gave us life so that we could experience abundant joy. We cheat ourselves when we don't commit to that. I am as guilty of allowing things to zap my joy as much as anyone. I lose my patience, get angry at my spouse (like really angry...), experience road rage (or at least road annoyance). In a word, every day of my life I am trying yet still fall short of the glory of God.

If you'd like to know how often I fall short just ask Andre!

Commit to Experience Joy Every Day

What I can say is despite my failures, I constantly strive to achieve experience that joy. It seems like when I forget, there is a holiday to remind me. Holidays matter. They are a time to convene with family, eat great food and to have our spirits renewed. Your family is where you experience God's love most acutely. As you enjoy your Easter dinner, take a moment to breathe it all in and recognize that you are experiencing something sacred.

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake, has forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32
Easter is About Love

And what better holiday than Easter to remind all of us of God's promises and forgiveness. As it said in a book I read to my kids this week, Easter is about love. So, on this Good Friday, I am reminded of the Lord's great sacrifice that demonstrates His profound love for us. Also, since this year, Easter and Passover overlap, this has been the holiest of weeks.

So, enjoy your family. Embrace them and the joy. And above all, be renewed. Happy Easter!!!
