One Secret to Success for a Working Mom, Expand Your Village (Jack and Jill of America)

Jack and Jill of America member and her daughter Recently, I have become keenly aware that good kids are created by accident. They become good because someone made a concerted effort to pour positive things into them--things like, honor, discipline and respect for others. These qualities are taught through lessons and by observation. For that reason, I have been actively considering how to give my children more examples of people who embody those qualities.  Indeed, raising my children to become good people is my most important job.

Being a mom is like being a short order cook

#Lunch

Before I had kids, a friend with children made the following comment, "I'm not a short order cook so I'm not taking orders. My kids eat what I give them." I admire that friend for a lot of things. However, this is at the top of the list. I often feel like a short order cook because my kids like different things. If I give them something they don't like, they don't eat it.

Kids Aren't the Only Picky Eaters

I know that we shouldn't indulge their every whim. And, I don't do that. That said, I also find it as easy to make them something they like as it is to make them something they don't like. And here's the rub. My husband eats chicken breasts and vegetables for dinner, nearly exclusively. And, because according to him he's "focused on nutrition and not taste", when he makes it, I think his chicken is often tough and tasteless. I don't want to subject the kids to that!

The other thing is, I love rice. I eat it nearly every day. The only thing I really want for dinner is a protein and rice. I'll throw vegetables in there too if I have them and they're crunchy. The aforementioned vegetables that my husband makes are often too mushy for me.

As I write this I realize that I'm not a short order cook because they are so picky. It is because my husband and I are are so picky. Collectively, the kids would eat chicken, peas, macaroni and cheese and naan every night. They wouldn't all eat all of the things. However, each of them would be able to have a balanced meal with those options.

The problem is, with the exception of chicken, I don't like those things. And, while my husband likes vegetables, he doesn't like peas every day. So, being a short order cook is my reality. for awhile. Looking forward to the day when my daughter can take some orders!
